Laser Cutting Faux Leather

Leather is an extremely popular material to laser engrave and cut for many reasons. Rawhide pieces or ready-made leather goods, relatively cost-effective

and are easily available products. They are also extremely durable. They have a high perception value when laser personalized for a customer.

Leather Types

 

The engraving results you get with your laser depend on the type of skin you're working on and how the laser beam reacts with it.

 

Real 4 basic types of leather according to its raw state before processing:

 

  • (Full Grain) - Full grain leather or Grain leather includes the entire leather layer without any removal on the surface. It is generally considered the highest quality leather. Furniture and shoes are often made from full-grain leather.

  • (Top Grain) - Top First Class Quality Leather: It contains the outer layer of the hide, known as leather, which contains thinner, more dense fibers and provides durability. Depending on the thickness, it may also contain some of the more fibrous substrate known as the corium.

  • Corrected Grain - Genuine Leather / Split Leather, also known as "genuine leather". It has a surface that has been subjected to certain processes to create a more homogeneous appearance with smoothed grain. This usually involves buffing or sanding any imperfections in the grain leather, then painting and embossing the surface.

  • Bonded / Salpa Leather: The lowest quality, consisting of leather scraps.

There are various options under four main types of leather, including pigmented leather, vegetable tanned leather, antique grain leather, and many more.

 

Suede is another type of soft leather, and although it is not as durable as the types we mentioned above, it can be engraved and cut with a laser.
